Micaella Penning is a writer, photographer, painter and cartographer living in Duluth, Minnesota. An avid sailor, she is a Licensed Master Mariner through the U.S. Coast Guard, while also holding bachelor degrees in Geography and International Studies and a Master of Arts in English from the University of Minnesota Duluth. Travel has always been a passion for her. Even before she could read she would spend hours looking at maps, atlases, and books of foreign lands. She began traveling in the U.S. on camping road trips with her brother at the age of 16, and started to explore other countries and cultures, often alone, staying in hostels and living out of a backpack. Growing up in a family of artists, Micaella learned from a young age to study the landscapes around her from new and changing perspectives. Since 2007, she has had gallery representation for her oil paintings, and her writing and photography published in regional magazines and newspapers. Through her photography Micaella seeks to capture beauty in the world around her, whether in remote or urban landscapes, transforming the chaotic into balanced simplicity. To inquire about freelance work or purchasing a photograph, please visit the contact page.
